Freedom

Let’s Be Free Spirits

The wheels are in motion, so to speak, for me to begin living a nomadic life. Not literally in motion, but the search is underway for my home on wheels.

My life so far has not been romantically free spirited. Like many of you it’s had its share of magic moments, but for the most part, it’s been pretty standard issue. I’ve lived the life most women of my age were expected to live. Many of us worked for a few years after high school, got married, then birthed and raised our children. Unlike our own mothers, we went back to work when our littles were old enough and now we’re retiring. Again, unlike our own mothers, many of us have arrived at retirement divorced and perhaps find ourselves back at square one.

We may be starting life over, with little to show for our years as working mums, because like our mothers, our husbands still handled the finances. So now I think it should be ‘our time’. For me and possibly some of you, we do have options our mothers didn’t. We are the generation of the ’summer of love’, the ‘flower children’ of the 60s and we had a freedom our mothers never had. I think those years of more freedom are what allow us to see the possibilities lying before us now. We can buy an RV and hit the road, we can retire to Mexico – as one adventurous friend of mine did this very month – or anywhere else in the world. We have options!

If any of you have ever contemplated this lifestyle, I can’t emphasize enough, that due diligence is imperative. On a daily basis, and for several years now, I have been researching every aspect of living as a solo nomad. This lengthy research process is one of the main reasons why I feel ready to purchase and begin renovations on my new home. I’m not worried about being lonely. I like my alone time, in fact I find I need it and if I ever want company, I have a long list of family and friends who want to go on road trips with me! I will love doing that, but not until I have gained some experience and a level of comfort with my new life.

This year will be about pushing myself out of my comfort zone and using my new found sense of freedom to create a joyful new lifestyle for myself. Wish me luck!
